17 <p>Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth
18 on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and
19 dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
20 Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing
21 whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so
22 dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-
23 field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of
24 that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave
25 their lives that this nation might live. It is altogether
26 fitting and proper that we should do this.
27 But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate...we cannot
28 consecrate...we cannot hallow...this ground. The brave men,
29 living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it
30 far above our poor power to add or detract. The world
31 will little note nor long remember what we say here, but
32 it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the
33 living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished
34 work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly
35 advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the
36 great task remaining before us...that from these honored
37 dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which
38 they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here
39 highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain;
40 that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of
41 freedom; and that government of the people, by the people,
42 for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
